WSP Increases DUI Patrols for the Holidays

If you’re traveling or celebrating this week, it’s important to know that DUI enforcement across Washington is already elevated, and it will remain that way through New Year’s Day. The Washington State Patrol has increased DUI patrols along I-5 between Everett and Lynnwood as part of a statewide holiday emphasis effort. These patrols began before Christmas and are continuing during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

What Holiday DUI Patrols Really Mean

During holiday emphasis periods, law enforcement agencies assign additional officers to look for impaired or “collision-causing” driving behaviors. That can include obvious signs of impairment, but it can also include things many drivers don’t expect, such as drifting within a lane, slow reaction times, or minor traffic violations.

With more patrols concentrated on major corridors like I-5, stops happen more frequently, and investigations can escalate quickly. Even drivers who don’t feel impaired may be questioned or, in some cases, arrested based on observed indicators.

Why These Patrols Increase Arrest Risk

According to preliminary data from the Washington Traffic Safety Commission, hundreds of people are killed each year in crashes involving impaired drivers. In response, law enforcement agencies typically adopt a zero-tolerance mindset during the holidays.

What many people don’t realize is that impairment isn’t limited to alcohol.

Fatigue, prescription medications, cannabis, and even stress can affect driving behavior, especially during late-night travel after holiday gatherings. During emphasis patrols, officers are trained to treat any indicators seriously.

Extra Patrols Continue Through New Year’s Day

Washington’s holiday DUI patrols are expected to continue through New Year’s Day, particularly on major roadways and during evening and overnight hours. If you’re heading out to celebrate, planning ahead (rideshares, designated drivers, or staying put) can help you avoid unnecessary risk. If you or someone you care about is arrested for DUI during this holiday enforcement period, know that help is available. One mistake should not define your future, and having the right defense strategy early can make a meaningful difference.
