Getting Back on the Road After a DUI: Ignition Interlocks in Washington State

Putting an ignition interlock device (IID) in your car allows you to drive while your license is suspended or revoked for a drug or alcohol-related offense in Washington State. The device can be ordered by the Court or by the Department of Licensing. LifeSafer ignition interlocks are discrete units, about the size of a cell phone, that are certified in Washington State to meet all requirements so you can freely drive. If you are required to have an interlock device installed in your vehicle, we will take you through all the steps to help get you going.

How Do Ignition Interlocks Work?

Once you have installed the ignition interlock, it will not start unless you pass a breath test via the IID. To start the vehicle, you must blow into the device handset before you turn the key in the car’s ignition. This provides a breath sample that the device tests to make sure your blood alcohol content is below .025, as required by Washington State. Once the breath sample has been verified to be below the legal limit, the car will start.

Once the car is started, the interlock device randomly prompts you to provide “retests” until the car is turned off. The LifeSafer device is easy to operate and is very reliable. Having an ignition interlock device and an ignition interlock license means you can drive anywhere, including:

  1. Work
  2. School
  3. Grocery store
  4. Daycare
  5. A friend’s house
  6. All the places you need and want to go

People often ask us if their car will suddenly turn off due to the interlock device. The answer to this question is no, the LifeSafer ignition interlock does not stop your car, it only prevents it from starting. To get a full idea of how the process works, watch our training video.

The Freedom to Drive Anywhere

In many cases, Washington State will require that you get an ignition interlock driver’s license as well as getting the interlock installed in every vehicle you drive. Having this combination will restore your freedom to drive after a being arrested for DUI.
