Suspected Drunk Driver Injures Marysville Couple
Early Wednesday morning on Highway 509 near 128th St., a Marysville couple was seriously injured in a collision caused by a suspected drunk driver. According to authorities, the Marysville woman and her husband were hit by a 24 year-old Tukwila man who had ran a stop and traveled over a ravine onto the southbound lanes of Highway 509. The couple's vehicle was hit by the man and at least three other cars after the initial collision.
Witnesses at the scene stated that the suspect attempted to run away but was later apprehended and arrested. The couple was taken to Harborview Medical Center, where the woman is listed in critical conditions and the man in serious condition. Speed may also have played a factor in the collision, as local residents say the area has been notorious for street racing and reckless driving. The suspect was booked into King County Jail and had his blood drawn. Officials stated that he will likely be charged with vehicular assault.
Elevated DUI Charges in Washington
This accident is an unfortunate situation and one that could have been prevented. For these reasons, local authorities and court systems aggressively prosecute individuals suspected of causing DUI accidents. When additional aggravating circumstances are involved – such as in this case – suspected offenders may face heightened charges and penalties. Examples of aggravating circumstances that can result in elevated DUI charges include:
- DUIs resulting in accidents
- DUIs causing injuries or death
- High blood alcohol content (BAC)
- Driving on a suspended license
- Having a prior DUI conviction
- Having a child passenger
- Hit-and-run or fleeing the scene
Because the suspect in this situation caused an accident that seriously injured two others, he will likely face charges for vehicular assault – a felony level offense punishable by a mandatory term of imprisonment. If it is discovered that he did in fact attempt to flee the scene, he may also face additional charges and more severe penalties.
