As a Seattle DUI Attorney, I know that drinking a driving is a horrible mistake that can cause terrible consequences. However, I also know that the public opinion towards DUI defendants is so skewed that it’s nearly impossible for them to get a fair trial. In many cases, if the conduct is sensational enough, the conduct is judged before the case is even charged.
Take for example, this morning’s crash outside Everett. A man in a pickup truck drifted out of his lane and hit another truck parked on the side of the road. The passenger in the truck died at the scene. The driver was suspected to be under the influence of alcohol by the news media.
Here’s the problem with this article. The driver is in the hospital right now – we have no idea what (if anything) his blood alcohol content was. And linking the crash immediately to DUI poisons the potential jury that may or may not preside over this man’s case. What ever happened to innocent unless proven otherwise? Apparently the freedom of the press trumps that right.
